Regional Epidemiology Centre (REC)

The mandate of the Regional Epidemiology Centre (REC) is to organize and manage epidemiology networks of national epidemiology groups; design and conduct appropriate epidemiological studies in Member States to generate epidemiological data for analysis and modelling HPEDs (including HPAI) control programmes. The Centre will be involved in disease intelligence work at the regional level to guide HPEDs control programmes. The Centre will also focus on the improved understanding of the evolution, emergency and spread of HPED at national and regional levels to better target disease control programmes. The Centre will support the identification of disease prevention, control and eradication policies, strategies and actions that are cost effective and have the least negative impact on the poorest members of the society in the countries concerned.

The main activities of REC are:
  • Identify training needs and conduct training for each country in all aspects of disease control.
  • Design epidemiological and wildlife studies and national disease survey plans to include serological testing of animals to establish disease distribution and prevalence.
  • Generate epidemiological information including characterization of livestock production systems and market chains to support risk based planning for disease surveillance and targeted control.
  • Develop appropriate HPED control strategies under different epidemiological situations ensuring that they are cost/effective and have positive or neutral impact on the poorest members of society, environment and biodiversity.
  • Develop communications strategies at all levels to support efficient disease control programmes.
  • Work closely with WHO in ensuring synergy in surveillance, epidemiological studies and control.
